The em dash is a punctuation mark which is visually a line in language. What purpose does a line serve within the worded sentence and how is it useful in the creative practices of design and writing? The MFA Thesis explored the em dash through its uses and functions, its symbolism as silence and the future concern around AI emulation of a humane mark.

The thesis follows a fictional conversation with the dash culminating in a series of design functions and contemplations around the physical form of the line.
